November born can choose between two gemstones to brighten up the chill of the month and welcome the holidays. November’s birthstones, topaz and #citrine, are both known for their calming energies, bringing warmth and fortune to those who wear them.
Citrine is the variety of quartz that ranges from pale yellow to brownish orange in color. It's named after the citron fruit because of these lemon-inspired shades.
The pale yellow color of citrine closely resembles topaz, which explains why November’s two birthstones have been so easily confused throughout history.
Citrine is also the Planetary stone for the Sun Sign of Virgo and the accepted gem for the 13th and 17th wedding #anniversarygift.
Hardness
Citrine shows a hardness of 7 on the Moh's scale. This makes it a rather durable stone against scratches and works well for daily wear and for larger statement pieces.
Sources
Most citrine comes from Brazil, but almost all of the Brazilian material is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine can also be found in the Ural Mountains of Russia, in Dauphine, France, and in Madagascar and the U.S. (Colorado, North Carolina and California). Every geography yields a different shade of citrine.
Quality/Color
Citrine’s yellow hues are caused by traces of iron in quartz crystals. This occurs rarely in nature, so most citrine on the market is made by heat treating other varieties of quartz—usually the more common, less expensive purple amethyst and smoky quartz—to produce golden gems.
Healing Properties
Citrine's energy and color are the reasons that this stone is associated with the sun. The stone drives out darkness and night fears and helps to protect against negative people. It also is good for prosperity. Known as The Merchant’s Stone or The Success Stone, citrine has long been revered for it's perceived ability to bring the wearer financial success. Intuition can be increased with this stone and it can help you to discern your inner voice from free-floating anxiety. Citrine is said to activate the imagination via the second, third and sixth chakras. It enhances mental clarity and allows for the flow of ideas and visualizing. When used in meditation, this citrine property is very effective in strengthening mental output and establishing goals.
